| [I] Doctor Casting [message #257494] |
So, 16 April 2006 05:58 |
|
I just watched the new episode of Doctor Who while reading Lords and Ladies
during the commercial breaks, and am now obsessed with finding a fantasy
Discworld role for both David Tennant and Billie Piper. Any suggestions?
I thought Tennant might make a good Verence. Too bad Piper is probably too
attractive to play Magrat. Maybe she could be Susan if she lost the cherubic
smile.

He would make an excellent Moist Von Lipwig, I would say. But that's

I'm impressed with her performances as Rose. She started off well and is
now showing the signs of becoming a superb actress. I think she could
handle Magrat if Jane Horrocks wasn't available.
Provided David Tennant can sing he might make a great Imp Y Celyn.

Has Eccleston found a DW casting yet? They just ran Dalek over here
and it blew my socks off.

Eccleston could be Dibbler. I always figured Dibbler sounded a bit like
that.

Incidentally, I heard that Eccleston may be on the list of actors being
considerred for The Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins. Anyone know if
there's any truth to this? It would certainly be interesting.

Indeed. I think the facial structure might work. It depends on how well he
can play psychotic.
(or rather giggling-dangerous-totally-bloody-psychotic-menace-to-life and

I agree. But if we are going by looks alone, Tennant would make an even
better Joker. He's got the nose, the hair, the right facial shape, and the
right body structure. And he did a pretty good psychotic in the 4th Harry
Potter film (although he has very little screen time).

Remember that Chris Eccleston is a classically trained actor (Webber
Douglas Drama School IIRC, and you don't get more classical the WD, or
better voice training) so he can sound an awful lot posher than that if he
wants.
I'd see him as a potential Carrot, or maybe Brutha. He might even make a
good job of Teatime.

True. I'd really need to see him in more roles. But I think his Doctor
accent would fit in well in Discworld: "Lots of discs have a hub!"

He did an absolutely *appalling* psychotic. He gurned, hammed and flailed
his tongue around for no apparent reason. However, I suspect that was what
he was told to do. He did at least have the decency to appear slightly
embarrassed by how much he was enjoying it.

I think Eccles would make an amazing Vimes. He might even manage to carry
off the "I have found my cow" bit without making it as embarassingly awful
as my imagination did (seriously, not the finest idea Terry's ever had IMO).
David Tennant would do very well for Teatime - needs to be young, bright,
chirpy, ever so slightly manic and bloody dangerous. Just make sure he
plays a *real* sociopath rather than a gurner.

I still think Jack Nicholson's Joker was the best one, closely followed
by Cesar Romero.

Mark Hamill is the *only* person to have played the Joker.
Nicholson and Romero played entertaining characters, but they
weren't the Joker (although Romero was closer to the 60s Joker
than Nicholson was to the 80s version).

Really? As I've said before I thought it was one of the most

Mark Hamill's a far better villain than hero, IMO. As a hero he's
insipid and boring, but as a villain... Watch "Hamilton" with Peter
Stormare and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, I actually said that in my above post. But not with David

I agree Hamill's interpretation was awesome. He is the only person to
succesfully mix the humorous with the truly dangerous. Everyone else has
either played him as a mere homicidal maniac, or a campy clown. He should be
somewhere in between.

I am in the U.S. One of my UK buddies was kind enough to record the
Christmas Invasion and mail it to me. He plans to do the same once he has a

There were. I sat through them for the simple novelty of hearing commercials
spoken in a British accent. Over here you never hear that unless the
announcer is being pretentious.

Odd. There certainly weren't any when *I* watched it, and the
whole *point* of the BBC is it doesn't run advertising. So I
really don't understand what's happened here.

I strongly agree. And there was the added bonus that we didn't have to worry
about how Hamill looked as the Joker. It just depended on what your
animators did with him.
I still say that the animated series was better than the crop of Batman
flicks going around at the time.
Incidentally, Mark Hamill did get the chance to play a homicidal-clown type
of villain before - the Prankster on the old Flash live-action TV series.
Nice, but no Joker.

Yeah. And Kevin Smith liked him as the Joker so much that he cast him as the
villian in the Bluntman and Chronic movie, which was largely a spoof of both
Batman and Star Wars.
Smith has always been a little weird about Batman. He named his daughter
Harley Quinn. Wish I'd thought of it first.

Trickster; The Prankster is a Superman villain. Apparently
Hamill reprises the role in the Justice League cartoon.

I meant the announcement thingies. Whadaya call them. Bumpers? Previews? I
really don't know what they go by, but they are just commerciels for other
shows. Same difference. Has it been rerun since then? There were ads for
Footballers Wives, Doctor Who Confidential, and reruns of the 2005 Doctor
Who series. I don't know what the first two are, but I assume they are other
programs. I'd hate to think they were actually selling anybodies wives. And
a thing that said you could "Fly the TARDIS" if you went to the website.
I think that's all there was for the Doctor Who program, but there were
other things on the tape I watched. Mostly reruns of sitcoms that I cannot
for the life of me find over here. Father Ted and Absolutely Fabulous. And a
Fawlty Towers, but I already have every episode of that, so I didn't watch
it. There *were* commercials during those, so they were from another
channel. They used to show AbFab here on comedy central, but only the first
3 seasons, and it has since vanished.

Yeah, that's right. Trickster is the one who wore the yellow striped pants
and was temporarily replaced by the video-game nut. Prankster wore the green
suit, and used to look like Alfred E. Neuman until he sold his soul for
better looks. And I can't believe I know any of that, or that I admit to
knowing it. Percieved Coolness Level: -.5%

Thank you kindly for the correction. It's easy to get the two mixed up, for
obvious reasons.

It's possible those might be the recordings of UKTV Gold repeats.
Possibly. Either that or your friend has inserted advertisements purely
for novelty value. BBC doesn't show commercials, but UKTV (who tend to
snap up most of BBC's stuff for repeats) usually do. Oh, and SciFi US
edit the episodes so they can insert annoying bumpers for their own
channel.

Okay, that makes sense.

UK Gold, probably.

There was a scene in a Superman comic a few years ago
featuring a couple of specially created old-school
supervillains. During an argument, one of them says the other
is the only villain whose codename got him in more trouble
than anything he actually did.

Have to say, I can't stand hamill. Only time I found his any good was
a villain role, however - it was when he played *ahem* "cocknocker"
:-)

Oh, no, the Beeb certainly does show commercials, only they're all for
their own bloody products and programs. Like the ones the uncredited
poster above (please don't over-snip attributions...) describes. These
are between the programs, not in the middle, of course. And they do seem
to be getting worse - they're almost up to Discovery standard, now.
Currently, they have me wondering what the great big honking problem is
with digital television. I mean, there must clearly be some glaring
disadvantage, if it sells so slowly and they want to shove it down the
viewers' throats so badly that they have to advertise it this
desparately.

Heh. I missed that, and it was my loss, obviously.
You never can tell what the consequences will be down the road about
decisions you make today - like, say, your superhero/villain name. This is
why the character called "The Gay Ghost" will likely never be revived by DC
Comics.

I don't know if there is any relation, but in the DC animated universe there
was a character called the "Gray Ghost". He was based primarily on The
Shadow and the Crimson Avenger and was portrayed as a television character
who Bruce Wayne had grown up watching and been inspired by, which is why he
was so similar to some of the early heroes that Batman himself was partially
modelled after.
In order to fit in with the idea of paying homage to earlier superheroes, he
was voiced by Adam West.
